Workshops and Instructors

July 21 (Wed): “Let’s Design an Apron”
Instructor: Shun Sasaki
In Japan, work aprons are traditionally worn by proprietors of sake shops, rice shops and the like. In this workshop, students will create a design for an apron. Later, the design will be printed on a real apron which will be delivered to the participant. The designs created in this workshop will be introduced, together with works by professional designers, at the “Creation Project 2021” exhibition, scheduled to take place from December 9, 2021 to January 22, 2022.

Shun Sasaki
Shun Sasaki is a graphic designer and art director born in 1985 in the city of Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture. He is currently based in Tokyo. He graduated from Tama Art University in 2010 with a degree in Graphic Design. After working at ADBRAIN Inc. and GritzDesign, he established his own design office, AYOND, in 2016. Mr. Sasaki received a JAGDA New Designer Award in 2020.

July 24 (Sat): “Let’s Make Pottery”
Instructor: SHOKKI
In this workshop, students can experience what it’s like to make pottery, right at home. After their work is completed during the workshop, they can send it in, and SHOKKI will dry it, apply glazing, and undertake the final firing. The completed works will be delivered to the students after the exhibition.

SHOKKI
SHOKKI is a label of handmade ceramics launched in 2013. They plan and execute one-off products – tableware, flower pots, sculptures, etc. – created for enjoyment with artistic freedom, rather than a quest for technical perfection.

July 26 (Mon): “Let’s Make a Cute Creature Brooch”
Instructor: Kodue Hibino
Kodue Hibino uses cloth and other materials left over after making costumes for the stage or television, and transforms them into cute brooches of living creatures. In this workshop, she will teach the participants how to create such brooches. All students are required to be accompanied by an adult, and both the student and adult will make a brooch.

Kodue Hibino
Kodue Hibino hails from Shizuoka Prefecture. She graduated from the Design department of Tokyo University of the Arts. As a costume artist she has presented her works through advertising, theater plays, dance performances, ballets, films and television. She is in charge of costumes for “Nihongo De Asobo” on NHK’s educational TV channel. This autumn, a solo exhibition of Ms. Hibino’s works, titled “forest closet,” will be held at Sogo Museum of Art in Yokohama.

July 28 (Wed): “Let’s Design a Graphic Poster”
Instructor: Mina Tabei
Students will try their hand at making a graphic poster combining the themes of “light” and “figures,” using simple figures and various items found around the home. Their works will be enlarged and printed, and placed on display. To photograph the completed works, we ask for cooperation from an adult.

She works primarily in advertising, CI, package design, book design, magazines, etc. Among her core works are: “Parco Christmas 2020,” image visuals for Musashino Art University, “#009 WALKMAN IN THE PARK” (Ginza Sony Park), and her solo exhibition “LIGHT and FIGURE.” Ms Tabei received a Tokyo ADC Award in 2019.

August 2 (Mon): “Let’s Make a Dragon”
Instructor: Midori Sakakibara
In this workshop, the children will each create a unique dragon by piecing together round paper body parts that contain drawings of things they like or are good at doing.

Midori Sakakibara
Midori Sakakibara is an illustrator born in Tokachi, Hokkaido, in 1985. She graduated from Tama Art University with a degree in Graphic Design, and is now based in Tokyo. Under the name “Midoriko Sakakibara,” she is active in diverse media ranging from illustration, music videos, film and GIF, to original papier-mache and handmade articles.

August 4 (Wed): “What’s Scrolling?”
Instructor: Shunya Hagiwara
In the art world, a scroll is something you hang on a wall. But in the realm of mobile phones and other devices, “scrolling” refers to moving the text or other data on a screen in a specific direction. This workshop will give its participants a chance to explore this kind of scrolling to create a story or communicate.

August 7: “Let’s Create Frame-by-Frame Animation”
Instructor: dwarf
In this workshop, first each participant will draw who they want to be their animation’s main character. Next, they will cut out the drawing and take photos, one frame at a time, for each of the character’s movements. The photos will then be shown in succession, creating an animation. For this workshop, we ask for cooperation from an adult. Before the workshop, please download a GIF app on a smartphone, to have the GIF animation made from the taken photographs sent to us. Details will be provided prior to the workshop.
