Akira Mori
Born in Tottori in 1935. Graduated from Tottori West High School in 1954. During his student years Mori belonged to the Art Club, and as a third-year student one of his oil paintings was selected for inclusion in the prestigious Issuikai Exhibition. After graduation, he moved to Tokyo and began studying at Asagaya College of Art and Design (ASABI), but for economic reasons he left school and in 1955 took up employment in the advertising department of the Daimaru Department Store in Tottori. In 1957, Mori returned to Tokyo and joined the advertising department of the Isetan Department Store in Shinjuku, in charge of fashion illustration. In 1959 he changed to Studio Uni, which created advertising for Isetan. As a result, Mori’s illustrations became representative of Isetan, and he maintained his position as a leading illustrator for the company until he went freelance in 1971. Thereafter he was active in diverse areas, his works featured in book covers, portraits, fiction, film posters, advertising, etc. In 1959 Mori won Special Mention at the Japan Advertising Artists Club (JAAC) Exhibition, and in 1961 he received a Silver Prize from the Tokyo ADC. In 1990 he won a Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for his illustrations for a work of fiction, serialized in a newspaper, by Ayako Sono. In 1991 Mori published a collection of his illustrations from Tokuma Shoten. Akira Mori passed away in Tottori from respiratory failure on April 9, 2008, aged 73.
