Charity Exhibition 2008

Umbrella WeatherPlastic Umbrellas Designed by 266 Creative Artists

  • DATES : Tue. November 25 - Sat. December 20, 2008
  • HOURS : 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Closed Sundays and holidays. Admission free.

Starting November 25 (Tue), Recruit will host its annual charity exhibition at its two galleries, Creation Gallery G8 and Guardian Garden. This series of exhibitions was launched 18 years ago to let many people know the enjoyment and pleasure that can be derived from art and design. Every year works created on a noncommercial basis by artists with links to the two galleries, both young designers and artists already active globally, are displayed and offered for sale, and the proceeds are donated to UNICEF Japan. The charity exhibitions are unique in having their highly diverse participants vie through their individual methods of creative expression, and every year they take place to high acclaim.

The theme of the 18th charity exhibition is the plastic umbrella. Plastic umbrellas have long been thought of as a disposable item, but recently specimens adorned with artistic designs have begun to appear, inducing more people to use a plastic umbrella they especially like. In response to this emerging trend, we asked 266 creative artists to design an original plastic umbrella that the user, far from considering it disposable, will want to cherish and keep using over a long time. The result is a treasure trove of umbrellas unlike any seen before.

The items on display will be available for purchase on a made-to-order basis. Proceeds will be donated to UNICEF Japan.

Exhibition Profile
The exhibition will feature plastic umbrellas designed by some 266 creative artists from Japan and around the world. Upending the conventional image of such items, these umbrellas will induce their owners to treasure and use them for a long time. All items on display will be available for purchase.

Specifications
Each umbrella will feature an original design on clear plastic. Dimensions: length 570mm, handle approx. 200mm, top approx. 80mm. The plastic parts of handles, etc. come in a range of colors – black, white, red, blue, orange, pink – with the choice of color determined by the artist. All umbrellas open manually.

Purchases
Throughout the exhibition, at both galleries visitors will be able to purchase the plastic umbrellas on display at a price of JPY 2,500 per item. The desired item will be made-to-order, with no limit on total quantities.
