“CREATION Project” is a newly launched series of exhibitions superseding charity exhibitions held a total of 18 times through 2008. Those earlier exhibitions sought to enable many people to feel the enjoyment and pleasure that can be derived from art and design. Every year works created on a noncommercial basis by artists with links to the two galleries were displayed and offered for sale, and the proceeds were donated to UNICEF. The newly revamped “CREATION Project” retains those fundamental parameters of operation but, through even more appealing exhibitions, seeks to suggest how our lives can be greatly enriched through the power of design.

The theme of this first CREATION Project is the “tenugui,” Japan’s unique cloth hand towel. Remarkably simple in form, tenuguis have long been a deeply ingrained part of everyday Japanese life, serving in such varied capacities as wiping cloths, head coverings, decorations and wrappers. For this charity event, 200 creative artists kindly designed a tenugui, each different and one of a kind. Whether of strikingly bold design or a conservative arrangement of a traditional pattern, every tenugui created is a contemporary product of the designer’s free imagination.

We hope this first CREATION Project will induce people across a sweeping generational spectrum to enjoy using an article of Japanese culture worthy of being treasured long into the future.
