The Yusaku Kamekura Design Award was established in 1999 to honor the achievements of the late graphic designer Yusaku Kamekura, who died in 1997, and to contribute to the further development of the graphic design field. Operation of the award program and selection of the winner, chosen annually, are performed by the Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. (JAGDA). JAGDA awards the prize to the designer whose works are judged most worthy among all entries featured in its yearbook, Graphic Design in Japan.

The 14th Yusaku Kamekura Design Award was bestowed on Katsuhiko Shibuya for “SHISEIDO,” his series of corporate posters created for the cosmetics firm Shiseido Co., Ltd. Mr. Shibuya currently serves as creative director in Shiseido’s advertising department, where his talents are applied to advance the company’s global expansion initiatives. To date he has performed art direction of numerous corporate and product ads, the latter for cosmetics including Shiseido’s ZEN, INOUI ID and ELIXIR lines.

Mr. Shibuya’s award-winning works are corporate advertising posters fusing Shiseido’s traditional arabesque pattern with the company’s corporate typography. Representing the sixth year in an ongoing series of works that began as magazine ads, Mr. Shibuya’s latest works were chosen for the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award in recognition of the way they take Shiseido’s traditional identity – its use of arabesque – and transform it into a graphic design for a new era.

CREATION GALLERY G8 is pleased to host a solo exhibition commemorating Mr. Shibuya’s winning of this highly regarded award.
