chelfitsch is a theater company founded in 1997 by Toshiki Okada, who personally writes and produces all of the troupe’s works. chelfitsch has attracted widespread attention, not only within the theater realm but also within art and literary circles, for its unique manner of expression characterized by its lines spoken in the jargon of the young and its exaggerated physical movements drawn from everyday gestures. In recent years chelfitsch has also expanded its territory of activity, having performed not only at home in Japan but in more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe and North America. Each time the troupe performs a new work, it continually gives rise to a new methodology.
This exhibition shines the spotlight on the various elements that go into the creation of chelfitch’s world – including Mr. Okada’s words, the actors, stage sets and lighting. Through posters, handbills and other graphics used to promote its performances, as well as stage photographs, the exhibition offers a retrospective look at the troupe’s activities to date.
What is chelfitsch all about?
What does chelfitsch seek to express?
With this first full-fledged exhibition, we hope to give visitors the opportunity to experience chelfitsch from a perspective slightly different from attending their stage performances.
“I hope this exhibition will enable people to see a side, or sides, of chelfitsch that hasn’t been emphasized very much until now.” – Toshiki Okada
