TOKYO ILLUSTRATORS SOCIETY PRESENTS

Decoleles ♪148 Ukuleles Designed by Illustrators

  • DATES : Tue. September 8 - Wed. October 7, 2015
  • HOURS : 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Closed Sundays and holidays. Admission free.

Founded in 1988, the Tokyo Illustrators Society (TIS) undertakes a broad array of activities – organizing exhibitions, conducting open competitions to nurture future illustrators, publishing, holding study seminars, etc. – all aimed at discovering new possibilities in illustration and developing the field further.
For the 21st in its series of ongoing exhibitions, TIS this year called on illustrators to create “decoleles”: decorated ukuleles. The ukulele is among the smallest and most charming of musical instruments, and the participating illustrators have created designs well befitting its peaceful, laid-back sound image. Each decolele on display is one-of-a-kind. We eagerly invite visitors to come and see – and maybe hear? – this year’s enjoyable TIS exhibition.

Exhibition Profile
Display and sale of ukuleles featuring original artwork by 148 illustrators.

Price
¥35,000 per ukulele. (At the request of the illustrator, works by the following members will not be for sale: Mitsuru Gotsuji, Osamu Kitamura, Hisako Nakayama, Kunio Sato.)

* Please note that cash payments are required; purchase by credit card will not be accommodated.

The price has been set at an attractive level to enable fans of the illustrators to purchase works for their personal collections. The price does not include ownership rights or copyrights.

Sale of Works on Opening Day
Anyone interested in making a purchase is invited to participate in a drawing by lots. Lots will be distributed in the gallery between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. on September 8 (Tue). The drawing will commence at 11:30 a.m. to determine the order of purchasers, and purchasers will then select their purchases in that order.
* Visitors who arrive at the gallery after 11:30 a.m. on September 8 will need to wait until all participants in the drawing of lots have made their desired purchases. Works not yet purchased will then be available on a first-come-first-served basis.
* Participants in the drawing of lots will each receive only one lot. Reservations for lots by telephone will not be accepted. Each lot can be used to purchase one item only.

Handling of Ukuleles
Some of the ukuleles on display were decorated for visual appreciation only and are not meant to be played. For the reference of potential purchasers, the gallery will post indications of whether an instrument is playable or not, based on information from the illustrators. It should also be noted that even with ukuleles designated as playable, actually playing them may result in peeling of the surface artwork or discoloration. Please keep these points in mind when considering a purchase.

Tokyo Illustrators Society
