The 5th "1_WALL" Photography Competition Grand Prize Winner
Unique Artistry Combining Fascinating Photographs and Words
Yuki Shimizu won the Grand Prize in the 5th “1_WALL” Photography Competition for “tky⇔almgrd,” works depicting a unique worldview through photos that are unstably focused and composed in ways that defy easy understanding, accompanied by words akin to poetry. One judge commented on Shimizu’s ambitious display combining photos and words saying, “Though her photos are unpretentious, I sense a marvelous power in them that subliminally penetrates deep within me.” Another judge commented, “It isn’t very often that I’m swept away by the power of an image to the extent I am seeing Shimizu’s photos. Her words are attractive too, yet even without them I think her photos can stand on their own.”
Shimizu creates her works by freely combining snapshots of images that strike her fancy with a story they inspire in her. Her aim is to establish a new way of showing photos by combining photos with words, “guiding the photos with a story.” Her stories don’t draw clear conclusions, however; they are more elusive, unstructured and ambiguous.
Shimizu’s upcoming exhibition will mix works for which she won the Grand Prize – shot during her travels in Alamogordo and White Sands, New Mexico – with photos from her everyday life, giving broader dimensions to her stories. Her stories mislead and pull in the viewer. Are they daydreams or heaven? White desert or a field of snow? Visitors are sure to be intrigued.

Message from the Artist
Photographs kill light, and give birth to a new timeline containing any number of views and memories.
Our world is a labyrinth of homophones, so things that are similar but different are connected in hidden places.
Mishearing and misseeing are the keys to depths of time.
If you imagine as if peering into a mirror, a snowfield, sea foam and white desert intersect with similarity, and where one walked disappears in the waves, is blown away by the wind, and marks the start of a journey that never ends anywhere.
This is a story about a white desert.
Words are born from photos, the two perform in harmony, and with repeated misleading, they evoke the destination of an endless journey.

Message from One of the Judges
In Yuki Shimizu’s “white sands,” photographs and words awakened by them blend in harmony, then in dissonance, carrying the viewer away. Time is not an instant. Someplace isn’t any place. The story has no climax. A journey across all borders, guided by “misunderstanding,” freed from original meanings and names, dangling in disorder. I have high hopes for new places and new spaces born from the power of images derived from photos and words.
