Creation Kids Lab 2020

  • DATES : DATE: Sat, August 29, 2020
  • HOURS : HOURS: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. / 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Creation Gallery G8 has been operated by Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. in the Ginza area of Tokyo since 1985, as part of the company’s social contribution activities. Gallery exhibitions focus on graphic design, with the aims, through design, of enriching people’s lives and serving as a venue for encounters of all kinds.

Since 2018, every summer the gallery has hosted “Creation Kids Lab,” a series of workshops for young children. This year, the event will be held online. In this workshop, the participants will design the traditional Japanese square-shaped wooden boxes known as “masu.”

Masu boxes have a long history of usage as measuring utensils, but today they can also diversely function as a drinking cup, small container, flowerpot, etc. In this year’s Creation Kids Lab, the participants will let their imagination run free and design a masu box for whatever use they decide. The gallery’s hope is that this experience of learning how to design a masu box will give children a sense of the fun and enjoyment that can be had from designing and making things.

During the workshop, the children will create a design drawing for their own masu box. Later, their design will be printed on a real masu, and the completed item will be delivered to them. As part of “Creation Project 2020,” the children’s design drawings and completed masu boxes will be displayed at the gallery on December 1-25, 2020, alongside works designed for this event by professional designers.
