For more than 40 years, Masayoshi Nakajo, with his acute feel for the times and avant-garde design sense, performed art direction of “Hanatsubaki,” Shiseido’s cultural magazine. His logo for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and package design for Shiseido Parlour have a rich vitality of strong visual appeal. His numerous works for exhibitions exude his playful touch and experimental boldness. Everything designed by Masayoshi Nakajo delivered a fresh surprise and the fun of unraveling a riddle. Throughout his long career until his passing at age 88, Nakajo remained a designer who harbored doubts toward himself and toward “perfect” beauty, and who continuously took up new challenges in contemporary expression, starting from the act of destruction.

Creation Gallery G8 will host a solo exhibition of Masayoshi Nakajo’s works for the first time in 20 years, since the two-part “Nakajo’s Incurable Obsession with Fuji” was held in 2002 and 2003; and for the first time in 14 years since he took part in the exhibition “Double Suicide at Ginza 8-chome” with Kazunari Hattori in 2009. For this new exhibition, in addition to works shown at previous exhibitions, a carefully chosen selection of Nakajo’s posters, logos, editorial designs, and package designs will be on display. Visitors will also be given an introduction to his hand-drawn printing manuscripts, memorable statements and assorted writings.
