Philippe Weisbecker Exhibition: “recollections”

  • DATES : Mon. March 30 - Sat. April 25, 2009
  • HOURS : 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Closed Sundays and holidays. Admission free.

Starting March 30th, Creation Gallery G8 will host an exhibition of the works of Philippe Weisbecker, who has built a prolific career as an artist and illustrator variously based in Paris, New York and Barcelona.

Weisbecker’s interest is in objects: everyday, nameless objects that no one pays attention to but which, because of their very inconspicuousness, continue to exist, withstanding the test of time. Weisbecker reconstitutes the simple beauty of such objects and, using paper, cardboard, pencils and a ruler, depicts them, simply and impressively, so that a record of their existence might last forever.

This exhibition will introduce a myriad of Weisbecker’s recollections/re-collections of objects he has amassed over the years, revisiting them in his sketchbooks and loose sheets of paper, in two- and three-dimensional forms.

Creation Gallery G8 hosted an exhibition of Weisbecker’s works, titled “SIMPLY PUT,” in 2000. Although it was the first show in Japan of his output, Weisbecker’s works garnered high acclaim from members of the design and illustration profession and publications specializing in those areas. Shortly thereafter, he spent four months engaged in creative work in Kyoto under the “Villa Kujoyama” program, designated an artist in residence by the Government of France. That creative period led to publication of HAND TOOLS. Weisbecker’s works were subsequently exhibited at Book Cellar Amus in Osaka, Gallery Coco in Kyoto, and Rocket in Tokyo. Recently, he has been doing an increasing amount of work for Japanese clients, including Suntory, Toraya and Mitsukoshi.

Visitors will surely enjoy seeing the even more polished artistic world of Philippe Weisbecker at this, his first showing at Creation Gallery G8 in eight and a half years.
