EXHIBITION

Discovering the Next Generation of Young Graphic Designers

3rd “1_WALL” Graphics ExhibitionAn exhibition of works and presentations by six finalists after two rounds of judging. Who will win the Grand Prize?

  • DATES : Mon. August 23 - Thu. September 16, 2010
  • HOURS : 12:00p.m.-7:00p.m. (8:30p.m. on Wednesdays)
  • Closed Sundays. Admission free.

The 3rd “1_WALL” Graphics Exhibition is part of an open competition for the right to mount a solo show at Guardian Garden. The exhibition will feature works by the six finalists after two rounds of judging: the first round focused on all entrants’ portfolios, and the second round evaluated the portfolio presentations of the entrants selected in the initial round. The final round of judging will take place on September 2 (Thu), i.e. while the exhibition is in progress. During this round, which is open to the public, the six finalists will give presentations of their works, based on which the judges will select the Grand Prize winner. The winner’s prize is the privilege of mounting a solo show at the gallery one year later plus the right to prepare an exhibition pamphlet.
The “1_WALL” series was started in 2009 to supersede the earlier “Hitotsubo” exhibitions. Through three rounds of judging, the entrants in this open competition are evaluated for their creative talent and potential. The competition explores the participants’ level of commitment as artists.
The 3rd “1_WALL” Graphics Exhibition will feature works by six creative artists of great variety: some create works of wit and humor, others make abstractions or simplifications of people or things, while others express their individual worlds. We hope many visitors will come to see who among them will be the lucky Grand Prize winner, an artist to be watched in the graphic world of tomorrow.

*Grand Prize Winner*
Midori Sakakibara
Born in 1985.

“yoga grandpa”
My concept was to take the body of “grandpa” that has lost its freedom of movement and make it ridiculously free. I expressed the happiness of being able to move freely.

Natsuo Toyama
Born in 1982.

“kokeshi doll – trouble –”
The kokeshi doll stood fixed in place.
It just kept standing there.
Then, with a faint smile on its face,
after just standing there,

the kokeshi finally, inescapably,

had had enough and flipped over.

Sayo Nagaba
Born in 1982. Graduated from Tohoku University of Art and Design, Department of Fine Arts Oil Painting.

“one after another”
When you keep collecting in small units, eventually the overall picture you didn’t notice before changes one’s understanding.

fancomi
Born in 1980. Graduated from Tokyo Zokei University with Design degree.

“Fantastic Communication”
When you get emotionally involved, a story is born. I hope you will enjoy “fantastic communication” with my works.

Chiharu Mitsumochi
Born in 1986. Graduated from Tama Collage of Art with Graphic Design degree.

“demon of loneliness”
My motivation for creating works has always been my desire to interact with someone.
I made works from graffiti I wrote as if to insinuate that I’m OK being alone.

Nanae Yamada
Born in 1988. Graduated from Kanazawa University, Department of Education.

“fish and me”
I like fish. When I ponder my relationship with fish, I get a sense of my cruel side, my merciless side, my hypocritical side. I project myself in the girl to express the unpleasant side of me.
